Our needs in a great gym bag are simple—coincidentally, like most great gym bags. The right one has to have two handles and a shoulder strap for versatility, a long duffel-style profile rather than a tall backpack shape (easier to pack and retrieve your stuff that way), and plenty of room. And one other less obvious need: rock-solid hardware, because a cheap zipper or flimsy handle will tank even the coolest-looking bag. We want something that’s tough as hell, too, because it’s going to take a beating – for our money, that means a tightly-woven canvas or heavy nylon. Leather is usually great, too—but old compression shorts and finely crafted leather are not a great match, if you ask us. And finally, bonus points to bags sharp enough to pull double duty on weekend trips. Two birds, and all that.
