There are some benefits to the weather downshifting from sweltering to nippy. For some, it’s pumpkin spice-flavored things. For us, it’s outerwear. And right now, the outerwear we’re stoked to get back into our wardrobes is the varsity jacket.
David Beckham and John Legend are to blame for making us want to re-up on the once-hot jacket once again. A great varsity jacket ticks off all the right boxes: sporty, preppy, collegiate, and relaxed. And in 2017, they’re colorful. It’s easy to wear, looks good with a variety of different personal styles and on a variety of different types of bodies, and is malleable enough that you can find versions from the expensive to the affordable, from the fashion-forward to the more understated. There’s a reason why it’s one of the 60 biggest trends of the past 60 years.
Beckham was spotted wearing a flashier take Louis Vuitton, with a blue body, white sleeves and Vuitton logos on the chest and arm. Meanwhile, John Legend, fresh from nailing one fall trend, moves on to the next with his black/white/gray varsity jacket, which is free of any overt branding, but on closer inspection is, naturally, Saint Laurent. What can we say? The man even looks good when walking his dog, and does not f*ck around when it comes to good outerwear, so this is an expected turn of events.
