When your billionaire buddy tells you to wear suspenders, you wear suspenders.
A-Rod learned a valuable lesson this year: if you want to be a style legend, you need a good coach. And girlfriend Jennifer Lopez’s influence on the 42-year-old’s wardrobe cannot be understated. He went from baggy jeans and dad sneakers to $16,000 crocodile boots in the span of a year. Rodriguez is now arguably one of the best-dressed men in the world and he seems to be enjoying it.
Now A-Rod appears to be taking cues from another positive influence in his life: 87-year-old business magnate and philanthropist Warren Buffett. Because why have one legendary coach when you can have two?
In New York City for meetings and lunch with J-Lo yesterday, Rodriguez wore a slim navy peak-lapel suit with square sunglasses and black Chelsea boots. It was a slick fit, and tailored incredibly well—exactly what we’ve come to expect from A-Rod in 2017. (What a sentence to write! What a year!) Where he nodded to Buffett, his new friend and mentor, was in his choice of furnishings: a wide, reddish tie and suspenders, a.k.a. Buffett’s favorite way to cap off a businessman-blue suit.
If Bernie Sanders can be capital-f Fashion, we suppose Warren Buffett can be, too. Although, if you’re looking to wear suspenders and a wide tie IRL, use Rodriguez as your guide for how to make the accessories feel more “celebrity athlete” than “investment banker.” Buffett is a worthy mentor, but Rodriguez is still our style inspiration.
